Screen Breaks: Why Are They Good for Everyone?

  • August 30, 2023

Today, you see screens almost everywhere, from phones and smart watches to computers and tablets. People worldwide spend nearly seven hours a day in front of these devices. While they are essential to work and make life more convenient, you will benefit from giving your eyes a break from screens. Your local eye doctor tells you how.

Screen Breaks

What Can Too Much Screen Time Do to Your Eyes?

Digital eye strain is one of the most common consequences of prolonged exposure to digital screens. Blurred vision, dry eye, eye fatigue, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain are among its most typical symptoms. Some people also experience eye itching, tearing and redness. Fortunately, they tend to go away once you take a break from screens.

Poor lighting, poor posture, glare from screens and improper viewing distances can contribute to its development. You are also more likely to suffer from its symptoms if you have an uncorrected vision problem. An eye doctor can tell if you need prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses during an eye exam.

Why Give Your Eyes a Break From Screens?

Avoid Eye Strain

The best way to avoid digital eye strain is to take frequent breaks from screens. If your job requires you to use computers, you can try the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away from screens for 20 seconds.

Improve Your Focus

Many are hooked on the internet due to the instant gratification it brings. However, it can shorten your patience and attention span. Reducing the time you spend in front of screens will help your brain focus better on the task at hand.

Sleep Better

Have you been finding it harder to sleep lately? It could be because you’re scrolling through your phone while in bed. You want to stay away from screens at least an hour before bedtime. Doing so will help you fall into slumber faster and improve your sleep quality.

Have More Time for Physical Activities

You’ll have more time for physical activities when you take breaks from screens. Regular movement can reduce your risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. It can also help with weight management.
