Factors That Impact Vision and Eye Health in the Winter

  • December 27, 2023

While you’re bundling up to stay warm this winter, it’s crucial to keep your eye health in check. Cold, dry air, paired with decreased sunlight hours, can wreak havoc on your vision and overall eye health. Indoor heating systems and increased UV radiation exposure add to your eyes’ challenges. But fear not! You can safeguard your sight this season by staying informed and taking the necessary precautions as recommended by eye care provider Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry.

Impact Vision and Eye Health in the Winter

Dry Eyes

This is a frequent problem during the winter months, as cold, dry air can cause the moisture in our eyes to evaporate quickly. This leads to uncomfortable symptoms such as irritation, burning sensation, and itchiness. Keeping the indoor environment humid, blinking more frequently, and using artificial tears can help mitigate this issue.

UV Light Exposure

Even though the sun may not feel as intense in winter, the threat from UV rays remains. The snow and ice can reflect these rays, increasing our exposure and causing potential damage. Use sunglasses or goggles that provide 100% UV protection when outside to remain protected.

Digital Eye Strain

Winter’s shorter days means more time spent indoors, likely in front of screens, potentially leading to digital eye strain. Reducing screen time or using strategies like the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds) can help manage this.

Allergies

Wintertime may exacerbate certain allergies due to indoor allergens like dust, mold, and pet dander. Cleaning and vacuuming your home, using air purifiers, and washing your hands regularly can help keep these allergens at bay.

Cold Weather

Exposure to extreme cold and wind can lead to redness, swelling, and even blurred vision in more severe cases. Wearing eye protection outdoors, limiting exposure to severe cold and wind, and using warm compress for irritated eyes can help. For serious cases, schedule a visit to an eye doctor.
