When something gets in people’s eyes, their first instinct is usually to try to rub it out. Sometimes, even tired eyes feel somewhat relieved when given a good rub. This has nothing to do with getting irritants out of your eyes or offering it some respite, however, as rubbing your eyes simply stimulate your vagus nerve that slows your heartbeat and lowers stress levels.
In fact, all eye care specialists never recommend rubbing your eyes at all as the action could result in worse irritation and even an increase in the risk of bacterial infection. So, what could happen if you continue this potentially damaging habit?
Serious Corneal Damage
Most doctors of optometry would agree that chronic eye rubbing thins down and warps the cornea resulting in keratoconus. This condition happens when the cornea of your eyes are rubbed too thinly down, distorting your vision.
Exacerbating Existing Conditions
Over time, some fluid builds up in front of your eyes. Normally this fluid is drained continuously, but sometimes it gathers in high enough amounts, pinching the optical nerve and causing blindness. This condition is known as glaucoma and is one of the many eye diseases that can worsen with excessive rubbing.
Vision Impairment
Progressive myopia, more commonly known as nearsightedness, actually gets worse with frequent rubbing of the eyes. The pressure involved when you rub your eyes degrade protective tissues, resulting in a much more severe case of myopia. Additionally, a condition known as keratoconus can develop which causes a change in the shape of the front surface of the eye. This would then result in distorted vision.
