LASIK is a type of eye surgery for correcting eye refraction issues, and has helped millions of patients see more clearly in recent years. If you are considering getting one soon, read on as Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry discusses the qualifications for LASIK surgery.
LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a process for treatment of refractive vision issues such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The objective is to reshape the cornea and allow light to focus more accurately on the retina.
During the procedure, a laser is used to create a flap over the topmost layer of the eye and reveal the corneal stroma layer. The corneal stroma layer is then reshaped by peeling layers that are tens of micrometers thick. The flap is then repositioned over the reshaped cornea and remains in position until the cut adheres and heals naturally. The patient will experience blurry vision for a short time after the operation, and will regain improved vision once the flap fully heals.
It’s important to note that, like in most other kinds of surgical procedures, patients need to qualify for a LASIK procedure.
