Is Dark Mode Really Better for Your Eyes?

The rollout of dark mode in apps and websites has been positively received by numerous users. It’s often considered as the better theme compared to light mode because it’s easier on the eyes.

However, several studies are saying otherwise. American Optometric Association (AOA) pointed out that a number of research show that light mode is better if you’re reading or writing on a computer for long hours.

To give you a clearer idea about this, heres are three reasons why dark mode isn’t always recommended.

Color Contrast

Color contrast should be just right so as not to cause strain on your eyes. Dark mode typically features white text on a black background, and this is considered excessive contrast. That said, experts recommend using white text on a dark blue background instead. This offers enough contrast that’s easy on the eyes.

Light Scattering

Light scattering occurs because white text on a black background tends to cast light and creates some sort of halo effect. This makes reading more difficult or uncomfortable for users. Black text on a white background doesn’t produce this kind of effect so it’s naturally easier on the eyes. If you still find trouble reading comfortably in either case, visit an eye care provider or optometrist.

Focusing

Focus depends on the amount of light that comes into your eyes. With a good amount of light entering your eyes (such as in light mode), your pupils contract reducing the light that comes into them. This results in a wide depth of field, which gives you a clearer focus on the objects in front of you.

However, when your eyes are exposed to a small amount of light (such as in dark mode), your pupils dilate creating a shallow plane of focus. This causes your eyes to work harder in order to attain better focus, which means putting a lot of strain on your eyes.
