Eye allergies are very common, particularly during spring when there is a lot of pollen in the air. In today’s blog post, your trusted optometrist from Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry discusses eye allergies and their causes. We also explain how to tell the difference between an eye allergy and an infection.
What Causes Eye Allergies?
Allergens are usually harmless, but they cause problems for people who are predisposed to allergic reactions. Pet dander, pollen, dust and mold are all common causes for eye allergies. Certain eye drops and cosmetics can also cause eye allergies. Eye allergy symptoms include burning, a clear water discharge, redness and itching.
The best way to deal with eye allergies is to avoid developing them in the first place by making changes to your home and to your routine. Wash your hands after petting any animal and keep your windows closed during high pollen periods. As an eye care expert, we also recommend wearing sunglasses or glasses when you go outside to protect your eyes from pollen.
Eye Allergies vs Eye Infections
Eye allergies and eye infections share some common symptoms including redness, itching, burning and a clear and watery discharge coming out the eyes. However, eye infections also cause pain, a thick mucus-like discharge, sensitivity to light and a gritty feel in the eyes. If you feel eye pain then it’s likely that you have an eye infection instead of an eye allergy.
