Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is a safe and effective way to correct the vision problems of your child. But to get the most out of this treatment option, proper lens care and usage is crucial. When overlooked, your young child will be at risk for eye infections and corneal ulcers. For this reason, they’ll have to follow the hygiene routine prescribed by their eye doctor. Here’s what to do:
Lens Hygiene and Safety
Young users should understand the importance of safety and hygiene. Before they insert their ortho-k lenses, they should first:
-
Wash their hands and fingers thoroughly with an antibacterial hand wash.
-
Use a lint-free towel to dry their hands completely.
-
Take off the lenses while sitting at a table with a lint-free cloth. Don’t let the lens be in contact with tap water.
-
Avoid removing the lenses in bathrooms, where there are more germs.
-
Always check the lenses for chips, cracks and scratches because their surface allows for bacterial growth.
Lens Insertion and Removal
Young users should make a habit of inserting the same lens – typically the right one -first. A quick look, and they’ll see that the right lens is green while the left one is blue.
-
Remove the ortho-k lens from the cleaning solution case, and then rinse with saline.
-
Put up to two drops of lubricating insertion eye drops in the back of the lens. Place the lens on the index finger, and insert it in the center of the eye directly.
-
Rinse the lens with saline solution for about five seconds if they fall on a surface.
-
Dry and wipe the lens case with a tissue, and then keep the case lid off to air dry.
-
To remove the lens, use the middle fingers to open the eyelids wider. Then, use the suction cup to remove the lens from the eye.
