Macular degeneration happens when the macula, the light-sensing part of the retina, starts to degenerate. A healthy macula is responsible for clear vision. When macular degeneration occurs, the cells in the macula gradually break down, resulting in the center of the field of vision becoming blurry, dark or distorted.
As the term implies, age-related macular degeneration is more prevalent in people aged 40 and over. Additionally, genetic factors may increase the risk of developing it. This is why, during an eye exam, one of the questions an optometrist asks a patient is about whether or not family members have a history of AMD. Lifestyle factors, such as heavy smoking and consumption of unhealthy food, can also increase the risk of developing AMD.
The most common symptom of AMD is blurring or distortion in the center of your field of view, resulting in difficulties in reading and facial recognition. The center vision may develop a shadow or a fuzzy area that may spread over time. A particular condition called wet macular degeneration makes straight lines appear wavy.
There is no known cure for macular degeneration, but can be slowed down through a treatment plan designed by an eye doctor. Diagnosis is done through a comprehensive eye exam. Younger people may need to take annual eye exams as AMD cannot be determined until at a later age. Once diagnosed, the eye doctor will create a treatment plan that includes changes to the patient’s lifestyle and habits and taking food supplements. Laser therapy and use of low vision aids may also be included in the treatment plan.
