LASIK Surgery: Are You a Good Candidate?

How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a process for treatment of refractive vision issues such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The objective is to reshape the cornea and allow light to focus more accurately on the retina.

During the procedure, a laser is used to create a flap over the topmost layer of the eye and reveal the corneal stroma layer. The corneal stroma layer is then reshaped by peeling layers that are tens of micrometers thick. The flap is then repositioned over the reshaped cornea and remains in position until the cut adheres and heals naturally. The patient will experience blurry vision for a short time after the operation, and will regain improved vision once the flap fully heals.

Qualifications for a LASIK Candidate

It’s important to note that, like in most other kinds of surgical procedures, patients need to qualify for a LASIK procedure. The easiest and most reliable way to determine whether you’re a good candidate for it is to visit an eye doctor. The following are some of the qualifications of a good LASIK candidate:

• Age. The ideal age for a LASIK procedure is between 21 and 45. This is because human vision typically stabilizes at the early 20s and does not enter into presbyopia until after the mid-40s. Having said that, some people outside of this range may be qualified by an eye doctor.
• Vision. A patient’s vision must be stable for at least one year, without occurrence of corneal or retinal disease.
• Medical conditions. Medical conditions like autoimmune disorders, diabetes and pregnancy may cause complications after the procedure.
• Medications. Taking medications such as antibiotics, antihistamines, antidepressants and blood thinners may affect one’s candidacy for LASIK.
