Your Local Partner for LASIK Co-Management
LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is an outpatient refractive surgery procedure to permanently correct vision, working by reshaping the eye’s front surface, the cornea. When the cornea is flattened, for instance, a reduction in nearsightedness or myopia is observed.
The LASIK Process: What to Expect
Typically, LASIK eye surgery starts out with anesthetic drops being administered to the eyes. Your eye surgeon will then create a thin flap in the cornea, revealing inner corneal tissues. Computer-controlled pulses of cool laser light will then be applied to the inner layers of the cornea, reshaping the transparent, dome-like structure covering the iris and the pupil. Once the cornea is reshaped, your eye surgeon will place the flap back, aligning it with its original position where it will naturally and securely heal. Some patients report slight irritation within hours after the procedure is completed but most don’t have issues after napping and resting.
Your Options for LASIK in Northern VA
Bladeless LASIK is the standard procedure that uses an IntraLase laser to create the corneal flap. As it doesn’t utilize a blade, it is ideal for those with thin corneas who may have been turned away previously as they weren’t good candidates for the surgery. Bladeless LASIK has also been shown to reduce dry eye cases after the procedure.
Aside from bladeless LASIK, custom LASIK is available for clearer and sharper vision. According to FDA studies, it may even produce better vision compared to what wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses can offer, thanks to a customized 3-D map of the eye that can guide a surgeon better while performing the procedure.
