4-Step Guide on Cleaning Your Eyeglasses

  • July 10, 2018
  • Dr. Keith Smithson

Eyeglasses can help improve the vision of those with refractive errors like near- or farsightedness. Your optometrist may also prescribe a pair as part of early cataracts treatment. With proper use and care, quality eyeglasses can last you many years. One of the things you can do to keep them looking new and in good condition is to regularly clean them.

Guide on Cleaning Your Eyeglasses

Here’s a four-step general guide to properly cleaning your eyeglasses:

Step #1: Wash Your Hands Thoroughly

Before anything else, wash your hands thoroughly with water and lotion-free soap. Doing so prevents the transfer of dirt, grime and other matter from your hands to your lenses. After rinsing your hands, dry them with a lint-free towel.

Step #2: Rinse Your Eyeglasses Under a Gentle Stream of Lukewarm or Tap Water

Don’t use hot water as it may damage your lens coating or frames. Your eye doctor explains this step helps remove dust and surface debris, preventing scratches on your lenses.

Step #3: Use Lotion-Free Liquid Soap

Apply a drop or two of lotion-free liquid soap between your fingertips or directly on the lenses. If you’re going to use dishwashing soap, use only a small or pea-sized amount as it can be very concentrated. Gently rub the lenses and frames for a few seconds, paying particular attention to the nose pads, temples and lens edges and corners as these parts are where oils and debris usually accumulate.

Step #4: Rinse and Dry

Rinse your glasses thoroughly, removing all traces of soaps, suds and grime. Then, dry them with a clean cotton towel.

Keep in mind that these steps are only general guidelines on how to clean your glasses. You can ask your optometrist if there are specific details you need to consider when it comes to your pair. Some glasses also come with manufacturer recommendations on their proper wear and care.
